The Political Default Dawn Editorial (Set 1)
The most chanted term with economy, now-a-days is "default". Along with the economy, political and social defaults can also happen in countries like Pakistan. Economic default, if happens, can be reverted with the help of friends, government or international financial institutions within months, if not days. However, political default alongwith ethical default is a point of no return. Humane ethics are developed in human beigns over the course of millinias and it usually takes generations to develop a democratic political culture. The political termites of Pakistan are eating away the political culture of Pakistan. Vested interests of politicians, lack of accountability, politicised institutions, political engineering, governance crisis and degrading economy are taking Pakistan towards political as well as economic default. Moreover, the rotten threads in social fabric are damaging the whole social structure. The hope for the economic recovery is dying. Social and political cancers are spreading fast; causing a political and ethical downfall that can bring death to the nation.
Since the Inception of Pakistan, the political stability has been a dream. The basic reason for prolonged political instability is mostly dedicated to the numerous coups, institutional overstepping and the politicians are often described as the victim of institutions. However, this is not the case. These political aspirants are too sharp to be fooled. Majority of the political leaders in Pakistan are used to salute the rising sun. Same faces can be seen in every other political party over the years. Opportunism has become the basic ideology of so called leaders. Political ethics are long gone. Moreover, they don't fear accountability at any level, either it is at parliamentary end or at the voters end.
Lack of accountability has brought Pakistan at the brink of default in political, etichal and economic circles. Accountability is a necessary element of democratic political system. However, the political class runs away from the accountability by various tactics. To avoid accountability, at the parliamentary end these politicians save each others skin, at institutional level they use tactics of political victimisation and bureaucratic transfers and at voters' end they keep voters from hand to mouth in thier subsistence so they don't get any time to ask anything. Political engineering also acts as a nourishing element to bloom the garden of corruption and dynastic politics.
By the constitution of Pakistan two third majority would help any political party to make a free and fully powered government. Therefore, to establish government alliances are made too often while the intention of these alliances never alligns with the well being of the masses. In the last three democratic setups, no single party remained successful enough to gain two third majority. This aspect indicates that the political and social polarization is also causing a severe damage to the politcal culture of Pakistan. This declinig democratic political culture brings the economic chaos at every level in the country.
Pakistan has been depending on the IFIs for a long time. These IFIs have become so dominant these days that they dictate Pakistan even in its internal matters. In addition, the amalgam of corruption and inefficiency has pulled Pakistan to the brink of economic default. As the economic and governance structure get damaged, many social evils raise their heads and same is happening everywhere in Pakistan.
From Karachi to Kashmir, every part of the country is seeing a raise in the social evils like snatching, robberies, kidnaps, smuggling and most importantly surging terrorism. The people in power have become deaf to the cries of the masses.
Politicians, now a days, are only interested in their personal gains even at the cost of lives of public. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is no more a republic. The voters are not even considered as a part of democratic process. Masses are being disregarded and alienated extremely. Inflation has broken the back of ordinary people and the power corridors are busy in game of thrones instead of solving the mass problems.
The masses are in so much pathetic condition that the voter turnout has enormously dropped in by-elections and in local bodies elections. However, nations don't die and disappear this easily even with negligence.
The sky of hope has become too much cloudy. The silver lining seems to be at a light year's distance. However, the oridinary man, as usual is hopeful that his leader is the last hope, his country would recover, his children would get every luxury and his life would become ideal eventually. His hopes are practical and achievable the same as that of Scandenevia. The need of the hour is to purify the intentions and make everybody realise that nations grow when everybody strives for the country.
